u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 10h ago Bruh, what PC is $500? That's cheap as hell. My laptop was ~$800 when I got it, and my laptop isn't super high end. I'm actually thinking about replacing it after saving for a few years because a new good laptop like the framework 13/16 starts a ~$1,000. 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 6h ago I wouldn't buy a framework, its not rly a budget laptop at all, buy a laptop from bestbuy that's on sale LTT has a rly good video on buying laptops, and yes $1100 is budget laptop range 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 4h ago I don't want a budget laptop, currently I have an Acer nitro 5 (4050/i5-12500H) - i bought it two years ago and it's already gone to crap(Literal cracks and breaks in the chassis) I want something that won't turn to dust by the time I turn 20. 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 3h ago MacBook if u don’t want to play games, if u do then a higherend workstation laptop would be good 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 1h ago I don't play games, however I DO program and use debian-only tools. So it any PC I get needs to be 64-bit amd/intel and support custom OS installs(No locked BIOS) 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 6h ago What debian-only tools do you use? I don't think I can think of any that is debian only 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 6h ago I have a custom GoLang stack for my website(Which I would use the device to develop), it uses Linux/Debian only paths, syscalls, etc. 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 5h ago Horrible stack if its limited to your own system, put it on docker to develop, also a lot of paths/syscalls matchup on macos 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 5h ago Not my system, my system + 3(soon 4) servers. Furthermore most of the "Debian dependant" parts are ones that use dkpg/apt to install missing packages. Furthermore one of my tenets is simply to not change os super often, it's annoying to have a different UI. 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 5h ago Very inefficent stack then, those libraries get a vulnerability and you are fully compromised, or you leave one in your code edit: apparently that already happened lol 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 4h ago Yeah, it happened in the past, but that was with an entirely different backend. At that point it was PHP, I've since been transitioning(Mostly done by now) to a predominately GoLang backend. (See https://tumult.tgua.dev/cite.php?id=55) 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 4h ago Looks like Ai slop pasted all over, even the blog posts you made are ChatGPT, I can see why you don’t understand Apple now, your jumping on the Apple hate trend lmao 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 13m ago No, they're not, I don't use AI for blog posts whatsoever - And if I do ever have to use AI for advanced debug scenarios(Undocumented or undocumented functions) I use Proton Lumo, not ChatGpt 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 1h ago macos is probably the best option then for programming, and you can use a vm for a diff os 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 1h ago Mac OS is meh, fine enough if you use a VM(The performance overhead of a VM is annoying though). The problem is with the hardware, it's incredibly hard to repair and upgrade(Which is need often with how rough I can be on devices), furthermore I just generally dislike Apple, it's on my "Never buy" list alongside HP. 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 1h ago Buy applecare, and get a new laptop every 5 years, it'd be the price as buying and upgrading a framework if not cheaper but for better price per performance 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 52m ago Upgrading a framework to the latest CPU is $300, and gpu $400(you don't have to do both). You have to buy an entirely new MacBook to upgrade that. Also I said "repairable" not "replacable", they're extremely different. Also with framework you get 8-15 years of repairs for relatively cheap. (Often covered under warranty) - not 5. (Plus I dislike the idea of being locked into apple, like I switched from an iPhone 14 to unihertz tank 2 pro only a year ago, and windows to Debian 2 years ago. Rather not go back.) 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 5h ago Yeah, $300+$400 = $900, you can get a full new macbook at $1200 + with whatever technology advancement we'll see in the future. Macbooks are quite repairable if you have apple care, you aren't locked into apple either they literally have a very unbeatable laptop. I mean you seem to like LTT, even Linus likes macbooks, *He also invests into framework, as sure the concept was cool just not very economical* 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 4h ago "Macbooks are quite repairable if you have apple care," Again, macbooks aren't "Repairable", they're "Replaceable". Replace Versus Repair, two different things. Also as I said it's not 300 + 400, it's "$300 and if you want a GPU $300-400 more". You can upgrade part of it, like new CPU, sure. New GPU, if you want, et cetera. 1 u/Pale_Ad_6029 avatar Pale_Ad_6029 • 4h ago Yeah, you can choose to upgrade ur laptop too. If you want a newly speced out one go ahead buy it. If not then don't, either way, yes applecare does do repairs for anything that economically can be. if it cant' then they might replace 1 u/Any-Firefighter-1993 avatar Any-Firefighter-1993 • 4h ago No, applecare does not replace parts than can be replaced, and often up-sells and replaces more than needed. (See: https://consumerrights.wiki/w/Apple#Shredding_vast_amounts_of_fully_functional_devices and https://consumerrights.wiki/w/Apple#Parts_availability ) 1 More replies u/barrymaddox avatar barrymaddox OP • 3h ago Sounds like you got screwed over tbh.
